Santiago Feb 2010

The second time Hippo went to Santiago, she stayed for 5 days due to the earthquake of the century. The Pudahuel airport suffered damage and all flights were cancelled. At the Sheraton on Av Santa Maria we encountered madding crowds and long wait at the internet stations. The hotel had cracks on the walls, floors and ceilings, and there were broken glass everywhere. One afternoon the glass atrium exploded and fell. There were aftershocks every few hours. We had a relaxing and very enjoyable stay at the Espanoles. Its staff was attentive and very helpful. We had a very delicious seafood risoto at a quite authentic Peruvian restaurant with a wonderful waiter, just across from the Mapocho. They even had Inca Cola! The Parque Arauco shopping mall was enormous. There's an open gym in the small park by the river that had all kinds of exercise machines in bright red, blue and yellow colors. The airport was caos and we had to wait in the parking lot before boarding. What was perhaps the most memorable about this visit was the warm hospitality of the hotel Espanoles, and the fun and free outdoor gym. But Santiago just didnt tug at my heart as other South American capitals did.
